Ether Freakers.

c. 2021

An economic protocol, played through generative art.

Ether Freakers explores what happens when an NFT becomes both a game piece and a financial primitive. Each creature carries a withdrawable Ether balance and a claim on a shared energy pool. Ownership, capital, and competition are governed by one ERC-721 protocol.

Its creatures make that system legible: eight species, with appearances derived from their attributes and abilities. The generative art algorithm was developed with artists Ania Shestakova and Alina Loseva.

Capital and incentives.

Charging a creature commits Ether and increases its power. Withdrawing that balance releases capital but leaves the creature more vulnerable. Battles and transfers dissipate energy into a shared pool, from which creatures accrue a share according to their fortune.

Every action connects an individual decision to the wider system. How much to commit, when to withdraw, and whether to attack depend on both the creature’s attributes and the positions of other players.

Capture and settlement.

A successful attack transfers the defending creature to a new owner, but returns its Ether charge to the former owner. Half of the attacker’s remaining charge then funds the captured creature. The right to control a token and the capital committed to it follow different settlement rules.

Coordination and game theory.

Holding one creature of every species grants enlightenment: the group can neither attack nor be attacked. That rule gives a collection a property none of its individual members has alone.

Players composed new contracts around the protocol. Freaker Fortress assembled an enlightened collection and lent creatures out for raids. Freakonomics made it possible to attempt enlightenment in a single transaction, changing how new players could enter.

These mechanisms connect the game to decentralized finance (DeFi): programmable balances, transferable claims, and permissionless composition. Independent contracts can build new strategies on the same settlement rules.
